Why are my bf and i having this discussion..is it serious?

Here is the short version of the story:met my bf almost 4 years ago,have been dating on and off,he is going to the same school to work on his Master's(just finished his Bachelor in December 2008) and I am working on finishing my BA in December 2009.Recently while on the cell I was watching the FoodNetwork and they had Ace of Cakes on.They were showing all these gorgeous cakes,and then this wedding one which was OMG!My bf was wondering what was going on and when I told him about that cake and that is sort of the cake I would like whenever I will get married.He asked me if I knew my wedding as in how I wanted it to be and to be honest after having so many friends engaged,married and looking over bridal mags I sort of had an idea.I told him that my sister would help me with the weddinghe asked me how the wedding would look like and I described him my wedding which was way differently than is(what he had in mind).Since mine is more traditional with 100 people,a 3 course meal,black tie attire,around the world theme,different floral centerpieces on each table to match the country and a 4 tier cake(the colors would be purple and white).The next day or after 2 days we started to talk about rings.I know that you will think that me knowing what I sort of want from my wedding is well weird but what is weird is my bf telling me the kind of ring he wants to get me:princess cut when I think that is cliche.He knows I love the assher cut and instead of a diamond on the ring to use an exotic stone such as tanzanite,tsavorite,tourmaline,etc.My question is:why are my bf and I all of a sudden talking weddings and rings?We are not engaged and no he is will not propose to me.I asked him yesterday to send me a pic of the ring he likes or thinks I will like and he said "Then it will not be a surprise so you have to wait and see."
